Monday
All periods- Next, we focused on concluding The Veldt Learning Module. Students received finishing points by Mr. Reed. (What are the takeaways we should focus on from "The Veldt"?) We created Compare/Contrast 65-The Veldt, but we did not start on the activity. (Side note: I enjoyed today's conversation, despite having to pull teeth to get you connect the story with the quotes.)
Homework-Study for your final exam over "The Veldt." Play The Veldt Quizizz Review Game (code 4769 2459) to prepare for your final exam. Complete all work from last week by Wednesday. I will grade all assignments. Any incomplete work will receive a zero; consider this third extension an end of the semester present.
Compare/Contrast 65 (Digital Journal)
Create a 4x3 graphic organizer to identify noticeable similarities and differences between the short story and the two film adaptations listed below (The Illustrated Man ("The Veldt") produced by Howard B. Kreitsek and Ted Mann (1969) and "The Veldt" S4E11 (11/10/1989) from The Ray Bradbury Theater). Due to limited resources and Internet restrictions for students, I will show you both the 1969 and 1989 film adaptations of "The Veldt." I have also embedded the 1989 film adaptation below for your convenience. (Help from Mr. Reed: If you need a visual for how your 4x3 graphic organizer should look, I have placed an example below for your reference.)
Heads up: If you have not mastered the skill of creating tables/charts/graphic organizer in Word Online/Google, please learn how to do so this week. (See me, Ms. Fauntleroy, or a trusted peer for assistance.) This is a technology skill we have been using since the end of August. In the spring semester, we will move much faster. That is why I invested an ample amount of time to create and upload screenshots, slide shows, and tutorials to teach you guys the essential skills. Again, I'm here to help, but you have to let me know if you need assistance. (And I do not mean after the due date of the assignment. #NoBueno)

Announcement: If you plan on participating in the Fall Fiesta, remember to give your $15.00 to Mr. Poff by this next Monday (12/12). Help from Mr. Reed: Please make sure that you are keeping up with your work from "The Rocket" and "The Veldt." They are basically study guides for your final exam. Depending on your class, your final exam will be over "The Rocket," "The Veldt," or both. You will find out on Monday (12/12/22).
All periods-Complete the following journal entries in your Digital Journal.
Heads up: By now, you should be able to easily create charts, tables, and graphic organizers inside of your Digital Journal. It's a skill that we have been performing all semester. Today, you will use that skill for entries 62-64. If for some reason, you are having difficulties creating your graphic organizers, you can ask Ms. Green if you can ask a friend or you can create them on notebook paper and obtain help from me on Monday to create them in your Digital Journal. Either way, you should be quietly working without any excuses.
Graphic Organizer 62 (due 12/14)
Title this chart: The Veldt Foreshadowing Graphic Organizer
Let's put your skills to the test. Pretend that you are a detective investigating this situation. Review "The Veldt" and search for clues or hints that foreshadow the ending. Please open your Digital Journal and create an entry for Graphic Organizer 62. Name the chart The Veldt Foreshadowing Chart. Create a two-column, five row (2 x 5) graphic organizer that 1) lists the examples of foreshadowing and 2) what the events foreshadow. Place your selected examples of foreshadowing under column one of The Veldt Foreshadowing Chart. You should be able to find five examples of foreshadowing. In column two, explain what your five examples foreshadow. Tip: The hints and clues are things that might have saved George and Lydia if they would have noticed them.
Research It 63 (due 12/14)
Use the Internet to research and familiarize yourself with the story of Peter Pan. Next, create a chart or graphic organizer (ex-Venn diagram) of your liking to compare and contrast the setting, characters, conflicts/complications, plot, and any thematic messages you can identify in the stories ("The Veldt" vs. "Peter Pan"). Note: You will use this information to complete your next journal entry.
Extended Thinking 64 (due 12/14)
Is "The Veldt" an allusion?
How is Ray Bradbury’s “The Veldt” an allusion to Peter Pan?
Allusion- a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers.
Homework-None (unless you have incomplete work from this week).
Next week: We'll compare the original radio play and the film adaptations.

"The Rocket" by Ray Bradbury (short story)
The Rocket Discussion Questions
Reflection 57
1. Do you agree with how Bodoni spent his family’s money? Explain your response.
2. Using either Bramante or Maria, tell me how your selected characters’ traits assisted the author with developing as well as advancing the plot of the story ("The Rocket").
Reflection 58
Regardless if we agree or disagree with Fiorello Bodoni’s decisions, we cannot deny that “The Rocket” is a story about a father’s love and the sacrifices he was willing to make for his family. After all, it was the children’s happiness that allowed Maria to finally understand Bodoni’s choices, and the hopes that he had for their children. It’s interesting, but realistic that the children never knew about the cost of Bodoni’s decisions. I am sure that our parents have also made numerous unknown sacrifices for us.
Task: Tell your parents about the story we read in class. Ask them if they can tell you about a sacrifice that they have made for you/your family that you may not know about. Afterwards, tell them thank you and let them know that you love them. (Hugs and kisses are optional but add a nice touch.) Write down your experience in your journal.
Reflection 59
Select a quote that you believe applies to Ray Bradbury's "The Rocket" (The Illustrated Man). You will need to mentally explicate your selection and explain how you believe the quote connects to the story in your response.
“A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.”
John Lennon
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
Albert Einstein
“Everything you can imagine is real.”
Pablo Picasso
“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
Kurt Vonnegut (Mother Night)
“You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us. And the world will live as one.”
John Lennon
“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”
Edgar Allan Poe
“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”
Oscar Wilde, The Critic as Artist
“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
“Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird,
That cannot fly.”
Langston Hughes
“I like the night. Without the dark, we'd never see the stars.”
Stephanie Meyer, Twilight
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
“You can have it all. Just not all at once.”
Oprah Winfrey
“I dream my painting and I paint my dream.”
Vincent van Gogh

Video Game Designer Project
As discussed yesterday, it's a best practice for your teacher/instructor/professor to provide you with a rubric or some form of evaluation tool when assigning you major project/presentation assignment. But realistically, students will not always receive the scoring criteria for their projects and presentations. Let's use our last project of the fall semester to learn what a good/great/exceptional project over a particular subject should contain.
Step 1: You have been tasked to create a presentation over the career field of video game design, video game development, or video game programming (choose only one). Select a presentation software to create your project. You may use eMaze, Prezi, PowerPoint, or Sway. (Tip: Use eMaze and learn how to create digital work with a new tool.)
Step 2: Using your selected software, begin constructing a presentation on becoming a video game designer, developer, or programmer. Use the Internet to research your topic, locate valid information, and answer the questions you have in your KWL Chart 30.
Step 3: Your project should contain all of the items marked with an asterisk (*); those are mandatory. Feel free to include additional information in your presentation that you feel would be beneficial to students who are interested in becoming a a video game designer, developer, or programmer.
Step 4: Proofread your work.
Step 5: Be prepared to begin submitting links to your presentation on Monday. However, your assignment is not due until 12/14/2021.
