1. What is irony? Irony is a literary device used by authors to show a contrast between appearance and reality. Writers use irony as a storytelling tool to create a contrast between how things seem and how they really are beneath the surface. Authors can use irony to make their audience stop and think about what has just been said, or to emphasize a central idea. The audience's role in realizing the difference between what is said and what is normal or expected is essential to the successful use of irony. There are three primary forms of irony in literature.
Note: The term comes from the Latin word ironia, which means “feigned ignorance.”
2. What are the three types of irony?
The three types of irony are verbal, situational, and dramatic.
3. Define each type of irony. Provide an example for each type of irony.

- When you expect one thing but get the opposite.
- Situational irony occurs when reality or results do not match expectations. When an author makes use of situational irony, the opposite of what would normally be expected occurs. Situational irony occurs when the outcome of an event is the opposite of what one would typically expect to happen.
- A driving instructor who never learned how to parallel park is an example of situational irony. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, had a losing record as a coach. Naismith’s coaching record is also an example of situational irony because you would expect the inventor of basketball to have a winning record as a coach. When a mismatched juxtaposition of expectation and reality occurs, that particular situation could be described as ironic.
- (Ex- In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator, Montresor, states that his plan to kill Fortunato will only be a success if Fortunato knows that he was tricked, why he was tricked, and why he must die. But by offering Fortunato countless sips of wine while traveling into the catacombs, Fortunato becomes drunk. Montresor succeeds in killing Fortunato, but Fortunato does not understand why he is killed and it is uncertain if Montresor knows why he imposed such a terrible death on Fortunato.)
Verbal
- Verbal irony is the use of language to mean something different or opposite from its literal meaning. Verbal irony is often used to create humor and might come in the form of sarcasm, overstatement or understatement.
- Reacting to a hurricane by saying, “what lovely weather we’re having” is verbal irony. The inclement weather and, in some cases, the speaker’s tone makes it clear that she is speaking ironically. While she says the weather is “lovely,” she actually means the weather is terrible.
- (Ex-In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” the narrator, Montresor, lures a character named Fortunato into the catacombs under his house. On their way into the catacombs, Fortunato becomes increasingly ill and cannot stop coughing. Montresor pretends to be concerned with Fortunato's health and suggests they turn around and return home. Fortunato disregards his advice and says his coughing will not kill him. Montresor agrees, not because he is being nice and supportive to Fortunato, but because he has already stated how he has planned on killing Fortunato. Montresor, assuring Fortunato that he will not die of a cough is an example of verbal irony.)
Dramatic
- Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something a character does not.
- The horror genre is known for its use of dramatic irony to build suspense. If the reader already knows something evil lurks behind a closed door, dramatic irony is the reason a reader feels tension as a character reaches for the doorknob.
- (Example- “The Cask of Amontillado” is also an example of dramatic irony. In the beginning of the story, Montresor informs readers of his plans to murder Fortunato by walling him up in the catacombs. The audience is aware of this information. But, Fortunato is not, and does not realize he is walking into a trap.)

All periods-Please log into Teams to begin our live learning session. (Please see the instructions below if you need help signing into Teams and finding our live learning session.) Click on the tab (channel) that says 8-20-2020. I will use these tabs to organize our live learning sessions. This will also allow students who are absent to read and review what we did in class. Today, we will review our fall semester syllabus, my teacher website, the HMS digital agenda, and have a Microsoft Teams orientation. If time prevails, we'll also complete a mini-lesson on Character Traits and have an introduction to the Mission to Mars S.T.E.M. activity. Students may also receive their group assignments for Mission to Mars (depending on our productivity).
Note: If you cannot find your class period's group in Teams, or think that you were not added, please click here to send me a message or call me at (404) 436-0918. Also, it is important that you are on time. Attendance is taken at the beginning of the period. If you arrive late, it is very difficult for your teacher to notice your entrance in an online environment. If you are tardy to class, please wait until the end to inform the teacher of your presence so that they can correct the attendance roster in Infinite Campus.
Homework- Sign up for your class period's Quizlet group (click here for instructions and the join link). Please remember to write down your user name and password for Quizlet. Study the "Mission to Mars" vocabulary set on Quizlet. Download and format the 2020-2021 HMS digital agenda (optional). Order a personal copy of The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury. (If you cannot order a copy of The Illustrated Man, I will upload a pdf copy of the novel. However, it is not the easiest document to work with and requires a little work to find the stories. I definitely recommend purchasing a copy of the novel. You can find it online at various sources, ranging from $2 and up.)
Remember, if you miss class, it is your responsibility to complete your make up work. If you have to make up a discussion board assignment, please send me an email when you have completed it. (I will not know that you have answered the question otherwise.)
