1. Identify (list) the events that were both visible in the movie and located in the content you studied in our in our Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Extraordinary Life Learning Module. Note: Labeling sources can be done at a later time and with a partner or in a small group.)
Note: Selma is regarded as a historical drama as well as a powerful philosophical biography,

Podcast 47
While listening to the SFFaudio Podcast: "Reading, Short and Deep #001 - Zero Hour by Ray Bradbury," answer the following questions. Tip: Use the story to answer some of the questions. Attempt to complete the questions independently. Then discuss and compare your answers with a peer or small group of your classmates.
- What is the setting of "Zero Hour"?
- How does the setting of the story, including the time period it was written (1947) and when it actually takes place in the text (twenty years or so in the future), affect the characters and their actions/motivations in "Zero Hour." (Hint: Post World War II/1947/1968.)
- What is ambivalence?
- Why do Eric and Jesse believe the word "ambivalence" applies to Mink?
- What internal conflict(s) does Mink have in the story?
- Why do the podcasters believe that children are monsters?
- According to the podcasters, who should be blamed for the children's monstrosity?
- How does Bradbury use the adults in "Zero Hour" to emphasize his thoughts about the dangerous types/levels of attention children receive from their parents? (Help from Mr. Reed: The podcasters believe the story suggests that adults are not attentive enough to children. Why? 'Parents ignoring what's going on in the minds of children.')
- Why do Eric and Jesse believe "Zero Hour" should not have an ending or that the resolution should not be of great importance?
- What are Eric and Jesse's thoughts on Bradbury's use of the line: "Peekaboo." (Hint: Think about the concept of the game Peekaboo."
- What does Eric and Jesse think "Zero Hour" is really about? (Hint: Types of complacency.)
- What novel do the podcasters believe may have influenced Bradbury's creation of "Zero Hour"? (Hint: 1937/H.G. Wells/24:00)
- Whose imagination or what type of imagination does Bradbury have according to the podcasters? (28:40)
- Why does Mink intensely hate Pete Britz and Dale Jerrick? (Reflect on the irony of Mink's thoughts and actions. Consider why it is ironic and the type of irony Bradbury subtly embeds into Mink's words about the boys to her mother. As you guys would say, 'hating someone for something you're also doing is crazy.' 28:30-30:00)
- What interesting thoughts do the podcasters make regarding Mrs. Morris' statements about children hating water and baths? (Consider the meaning of the idiom: 'wet behind the ears.' 30:40)
- According to the podcasters, what is Bradbury's motive in writing this story? (Hint: How/why is he trying to scare adults? 17:08)

Announcement: We have completed the administration of Winter MAP Test. Today we will resume our normal instructional schedule. Students who need to make up any of the tests will do so during ELT.
Heads up: If you received a zero for "The Crowd" (CommonLit) or your Spring 2023 Digital Journal link, you have until Friday to make up this assignment. Twenty points (-20) will be deducted each day the assignment has not been submitted. After Friday, any remaining zeroes are permanent. (Note: Any late work completed yesterday during Academic Lunch received full credit; no late work penalties were enforced. Consider this your late gift from the conclusion of the fall semester.)
All periods-Reflection 69. (If you have not posted a link to your Spring 2023 Digital Journal, do so now or expect to receive a zero. If you need help with sharing/submitting links, click here for a slideshow tutorial.) In class, students worked individually, in pairs, or in groups on their study guide questions for "The Crowd." Depending on the class, Mr. Reed assigned individual students/pairs/groups specific questions to work on in class. Students are responsible for completing all study guide questions by Friday. However, students will share the answer to their assigned question tomorrow during class.
Reflection 69
Do you think that Mr. Spallner had any control over his fate? Could he have taken steps to prevent what happens at the story's end? Is one's fate predetermined or is it determined in the moment based on the choices we make? Can man control their fate?
Homework-Reflection 69. Complete your study guide questions for "The Crowd." (Submit a link to your work on your period's Google Class Doc.) Review the Quizlet vocabulary set for "The Crowd". (Tip: You will need to really study the material and understand the concepts and elements in "The Crowd." The test for this story is separated into two parts. Part two is written response and I highly recommend you use the R.A.P.P. or R.A.C.E. Strategy to answer your constructed responses. Welcome to second semester.) If you need additional help understanding "The Crowd," watch the review by Let's Talk (below) for a story summary and discussion on the plot, conflict, characters, and theme.

Thursday (1/4/2023)
Update: Due to afternoon checkouts and inclement weather, 6th and 7th period did not get an opportunity to complete today's lesson and activity. As a result, I will reschedule the assessment over "The Crowd" to next Wednesday.
Announcement: Mr. Reed is transitioning our class into a ninth grade English language arts course. (I have to get you all ready for August 2023.) As stated, the changes will be gradual, but consistent. It's time to take charge of your education and increase your student accountability, responsibility, and ownership. Stay organized. Use your time wisely. Ask for help when/if needed. Use your resources. Study hard. Submit your best work. You "got" this!
Question of the Day (#QOTD)-Can you take ownership of your academic performance and properly study for Friday's test with limited assistance from Mr. Reed? (Note: You will have teachers in the upcoming future who do not have teacher websites where they list your daily/weekly assignments, friendly reminders, and team announcements. Your future instructors may not give or support the use of study resources like Quizlet, Quizizz, or Kahoot. What if you have a teacher or set of teachers who do not allow you to play review games IN CLASS to help you prepare for an upcoming test? Do you have the focus, drive, and student skill set to study for a test on your own?)
All periods-Student Work Day. Class worked on The Crowd Study Guide Questions. Students shared their answers to their specific study guide question with their peers. Students also used this period to work on this week's assignments. (All items in the Progress Check should be complete.) Mr. Reed gave students their Lexile scores/ranges (if available). Link to Spring Semester Digital Journals and The Crowd Study Guide Questions should have been posted on your period's Google Class Doc. (If not, you may have already received a zero for failing to complete this task by the original due date.)
Today's Student-teacher Conferences: Martha (1st period), Giovanni J. (1st period), Emily M.A. (1st period), Isabella V. (1st period),
Note: Tomorrow is the last day to complete "The Crowd" reading assignment in CommonLit for partial credit.
Need help sharing and submitting links? Click here for a slideshow tutorial. (If you still need assistance, please let Mr. Reed know for an individual/small group learning session.)
Need help finding a book to ready for your first Book Talk? Check out the information I placed under Monday's work. Lightsail may also host a book of interest that is appropriate for your Lexile range/grade level. You can also check out K-12 School Reading Lists for 8th, 9th, or high school students. Tech Tip/Suggestion: Add a profile picture to your Office 365/Google accounts. You can even use an AI-styled pic, which is the current trend. Profile pics help you to personalize your online accounts and can be great ways to professionally showcase your personality while adding a bit of warmth to your online persona.

Create a MLK Jr. KWL Chart in your Digital Journal. Complete the "What I Know" and "What I Want to Know" about Martin Luther King, Jr. sections. Suggestion: While you are learning about Dr. King's life in this module, please enter any new information that you have learned into your MLK Jr. KWL Chart. Important dates and major events will be excellent additions to your KWL Chart. This information will prove helpful when you begin to create your future presentation over Dr. King.
(Remember to select books that are aligned with your Lexile range and appropriate to share/discuss with your classmates. If needed, please feel more than free to discuss any book selections with me if needed. )

Part one is multiple choice questions to assess your reading comprehension. Part two is written/constructed response and I highly recommend you use the R.A.P.P. or R.A.C.E. Strategy to answer the question(s). Welcome to Spring Semester ladies and gentlemen.) Novel selections are due tomorrow. (This information will have to be filled in tomorrow under Quickwrite 71 in your Digital Journal.)

Board of Education changed American society. You should have a basic overview of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, King's work as a minister, King's role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Civil Rights Movement, King’s commitment to nonviolent protesting, and King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech given at the March on Washington. Recap
At this point, you should be knowledgeable about segregation and the fight for civil rights in America. Your lessons highlighted a variety of peaceful protests along with some of the more violent moments like the assassinations of JFK, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. You should also understand how the Civil Rights Bill, Voting Rights Act, and Brown v. If you are unfamiliar with any of the subjects referenced, please inform Mr. Reed that you will need to go back and review/redo the activities listed in numbers 1-4 of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Learning Module.

1st/6th/7th period-Lecture: "How It Started vs. How It's Going." In today's lecture, Mr. Reed discussed how our fall semester started and what the expectations are for our current spring semester. Students received a recap of the assignments that were due by 1/19/2021. Mr. Reed also reviewed the last Progress Check in detail with the class and the late work policy. Going forward, the flexibility to turn in late work will be reduced. (Warning: Do not take advantage of the extensions your teachers offer you guys due to being in a virtual learning environment.) Mini-lesson on creating better journal entries. (Remember to separate your entries by a page break, include the prompt, and check your grammar.) As of today, missing/incomplete work will receive a zero. It then becomes your responsibility to make up your missing/late work according to the late work policy. (Note: Work turned in after Sunday will be marked late and points will be deducted.)
Tip: Review the picture regarding creating a digital journal entry.
Homework- Review the Progress Check (see below). Complete any missing assignments by Sunday (if needed).
