3) What do the old man’s repeated acts of kindness toward the monster reveal about the characters?
4) Watch the clip of the “monster” and the blind man. Why do you think tears come into the eyes of the monster when the blind musician plays him Mendelssohn’s Spring Song?

Over 200 years ago, a teenage girl started a literary legacy that continues to haunt us today. Why do we still keep telling this story and how does it reflect our darkest fears? The New York Public Library's curators join monster theory scholars and best-selling authors to trace the history of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley’s classic. This special podcast episode ("Our Dark Mirror") unpacks the genius of Shelley’s novel, its origins and evolution—from the British Romantics to Black Lives Matter—to uncover how it’s helped us better understand ourselves, our humanity, and our future. Compare and Contrast 55
Create a 3 x 2 graphic organizer to compare and contrast major similarities and differences between the radio play and teleplay versions of "The Hitchhiker." (Column 1-Similarities; Column 2-Differences; Column 3-How the Similarities/Differences Affect the Story). Pro Tip: Consider the affects of the gender swap, removing Mrs. Adam's foreshadowing in the teleplay, the cause of death, sightings of the hitchhiker, physical traits (similar) given to Ron/Nan, the attempts by the hitchhiker to kill the protagonist, the resolution, and how the conflicts created thematic messages.
Food for Thought: Why do we fear the unknown?
About Jewish American Heritage Month:
President George W. Bush proclaimed that May would be Jewish American Heritage Month on April 20, 2006. This announcement was the crowning achievement of efforts by the Jewish Museum of Florida and South Florida Jewish community leaders that resulted in resolutions introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania urging the president to proclaim a month that would recognize the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to American culture. The resolutions passed unanimously, first in the House of Representatives in December 2005 and later in the Senate in February 2006.
The month of May was chosen due to the highly successful celebration of the 350th Anniversary of American Jewish History in May 2004, which was organized by the Commission for Commemorating 350 Years of American Jewish History. This coalition was composed of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, the American Jewish Historical Society, the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration.

Friday (5/6)
Announcements: Today is a normal, instructional day; come prepared to class and ready to learn/work. (The chorus performance occurs during your Connections.) Infinite Campus has had several glitches over the past few weeks. As a result, many of the grades that I have entered and saved were not successfully posted. (Meaning, I have had to enter grades for some periods multiple times. Major headache.) However, I think I have caught all errors and verified that all assignments up to the 13.5 Weeks have been successfully entered and posted. With that being said, if you received a zero for an assignment from January - April, it's permanent. Please review your grades in Infinite Campus and send me an email or schedule a conference if you have any questions, concerns, or issues. 8th Grade Dance from 5:00 - 7:30 p.m. (If you do not have tickets, you can buy them until 12:00 p.m.)
Word of the Day- Virtue: behavior showing high moral standards.
All periods-Students continued working in the Frankenstein Learning Module. As a class, we read "Frankenstein" and "The Return of Frankenstein" by Edward Field. Depending on the class, we watched selected excerpts from Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein (all snippets are available in the learning module for you to view at your convenience). Each class will participate in a debate: Frankenstein's Creation-man or monster? Students presented arguments and supported their choice with textual evidence. Exploration Questions 58 (due Tuesday).
Exploration Questions #58
Instructions: Read the poem “Frankenstein” by Edward Field. Answer/complete the exploration questions/tasks below.
1) In the first stanza of the poem, the first images describe the monster’s inhuman appearance. However, the speaker describes the monster as “he,” not “it.” What might the speaker be suggesting by choosing the pronoun he?
2) Why does the blind man in the poem welcome the monster? How does his loss of vision make him more humane?
3) What do the old man’s repeated acts of kindness toward the monster reveal about the characters?
4) Watch the clip of the “monster” and the blind man. Why do you think tears come into the eyes of the monster when the blind musician plays him Mendelssohn’s Spring Song?
5) Do you think the time spent with the blind musician ultimately brought the monster more joy or more pain? Why? Think about what the monster experienced/learned from the blind man, and what happened to him at the end of the poem.
Homework-None. (Consider taking advantage of the extra credit opportunities below to boost your grade.) Heads up: I am getting ready to review, grade, and enter your scores for the last set of Flocabulary assignments (Sentence Fragments, The Research Process, Paraphrasing, Note-Taking Methods, Plagiarism, Source Evaluation, Text Features, Works Cited, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Marie Curie & Determination, Yuri Kochiyama, Helen Keller & Overcoming Obstacles, Fannie Lou Hamer, Katherine Johnson & the Human Computers, and Maya Angelou & Resilience).
