Enter the following information into your chart: Film adaptations of “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” (Column 1/Row 1); Similarities to the original story (Column 2/Row 1); Differences to the original story (Column 3/Row 1); How do the differences affect the story? (Column 4/Row 1). Tip: Use bullets to organize/separate your text in the columns for similarities and differences.
Mobs Through History

(Example-St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, the storming of the Bastille, the Boston Tea Party, the Boxer Rebellion, and the Bolshevik Revolution.) Gather information from scholarly sources and create an informative presentation about your mob.
News Report (Option 1)
Imagine that you are a reporter who arrives on Maple Street near the end of the events depicted in the teleplay. As you watch the neighbors attack each other, try to find out details that will answer the who, what, how, why, when, and where questions. Write a news article that summarizes the events that have occurred on Maple Street.
News Report (Option 2)
Create an actual news broadcast that reports the events at Maple Street. Make sure that your broadcast contains all of the information of option 1.
Comic/Story Strip
Create a colorful, well-organized comic/story strip that summarizes the plot of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
Movie Trailer
Create a movie trailer for Rod Serling's "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
Film Adaption
Create a film adaptation of Rod Serling's "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street."
Compare and Contrast
Create a graphic organizer that compares the similarities and differences of the Twilight Zone's "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" (S1E22/1960) and it's 2003 revision (S1E31). Click here to see the the 2003 version of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (aired 2/19/2003). Word of the Day: Portmanteau (port manto), French in origin, is a word that blends the sounds and combines the meanings of two words. You're familiar with portmanteaus. You've heard or used the terms: motel, brunch, smog, spork, and podcast. All of those words are portmanteaus. Without using the Internet, can you think of other portmanteaus that are commonly used in the English language (hangry, cankles, bromance)?

Being able to obtain information using the Internet is a very valuable skill. You will need it in high school, college or your future careers. Research IT Use the webpage: Preparing for the PSAT 8/9 to complete this research entry. The goal in this assignment is to help you understand the purpose of taking the digital PSAT 8/9, as well as to help your prepare to take the assessment.
1. What is the Digital PSAT 8/9?
2. Why do students take the PSAT 8/9? What are some benefits to taking the assessment? (Click on the Why Take the PSAT 8/9? button.)
3. When is the PSAT 8/9 offered? (PSAT 8/9 Test Dates)
4. What can you expect with the digital PSAT 8/9? (Play the video: What to Expect with the Digital PSAT 8/9)
5. What should students bring with them on Test Day (10/12/2023)? (Click on the Get Ready for Test Day button.)
Pro Tip: Check out the PSAT 8/9 Practice section. You can also download free practice tests under the Practice Tests section by clicking on the Start Practicing button.
All periods-Copy and paste Before and After Reading 19 (BAR 19) in your Digital Journal. Complete Question 1 in BAR 19. Next, log into CommonLit and read Scientist Clone Human Embryos to Make Stem Cells by Rob Stein and Michaeleen Doucleff (2013/1140L/Informational Text). Note: The Lexile for this text places the article as a high-level 8th grade/low-level 9th grade read. Use the tools provided in CommonLit to help you do your best on this reading assignment (Read Aloud, Annotate, and Translate). If you do not know a word, please use the dictionary to look it up. This will help with reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition. Answer the after reading questions when you have finished reading the article.
Teacher Tip: Have students read this article before they begin reading Frankenstein.
Before and After Reading 19
Complete Question 1 before reading "Scientist Clone Human Embryos to Make Stem Cells." Afterwards, read the informational article and complete Question 2 in this journal entry.
1. What consequences and/or controversies can you think of that are surrounding certain current scientific advances? (Example-animal testing (vaccine testing), space colonization (Mars/Space Hotel 2025), renewable and alternative energy, the effects of artificial intelligence, the invention of social media/smart phones/video games and rising rates of addition, etc.)
2. How do the ethical questions brought up in this informational text about cloning compare to the ethical questions that surround Frankenstein and his decision to create life?
Help from Mr. Reed: A group of scientists recently generated embryonic stem cells through cloning, which may help cure many diseases. However, the process raises serious ethical concerns. The word ethical is an adjective, meaning, it modifies or describes the type of concerns people are having regarding the process the scientists used to generate the embryonic stem cells. You will need to carefully read the article to understand why ethics, or moral principles, are being called into question. Normally, when the word ethical is used, its generally analyzing how people are following the moral standards of their profession. And since ethical comes from the Greek word ethos, meaning moral character, ethical is usually examining a person's actions/behavior as right or wrong in a moral sense.
Here are a few main ideas I extracted from reading the article.

Main Ideas
- For the first time ever, scientists have successfully cloned human embryos that are capable of producing stem cells.
- This controversial development has re-sparked the debate about the ethics of embryo-usage in research.
- The stem cells produced by these embryos are to be used to help treat many illnesses.

2) What do you think about his commentary on why we need monsters? (Is there any truth to his statement? Explain your answer.)
3) Do you think we need monsters? Explain your answer.
Summary of "What is a Monster?" Video (Reflection 15)
“A monster is either physically or mentally detestable, often an aberration in appearance and behavior. The word ‘monster’ is generally associated with the concept of evil, both in thought and action. Normal-looking people who behave in reprehensible ways are also referred to as ‘monsters.’ What’s fascinating is that there are evil monsters and there are benign monsters and there are actually good monsters. Every culture in the world has monsters within in. But basically what are we afraid of? The main two fears are from the outside and from the inside. There are the other tribe, the other country, the other religion, the other political party. Whatever the ‘other’ is, we tend to make them monsters, and we are scared to death of them. Then there is the monster from within, which is explored in things like Jekyll and Hyde. It has to do with your own madness…”

How is she a dynamic character? Did we really know Mrs. Maloney or was she putting on a facade the entire time?)
Synopsis: "Lamb to the Slaughter" is probably the most well-known of all Dahl’s short stories. It’s gripping, shocking, and yet the story proceeds in such a rational manner that the reader’s suspension of disbelief is never broken. We are with Mary Maloney from the first sentence of the story, and only at the end do we realize that we never really knew her at all.

A mini-lesson on Foreshadowing
Authors use foreshadowing to build suspense. They also use foreshadowing to make stories more believable by partially preparing readers for the outcome. Think of a situation in which you may know someone is coming without hearing them first. You may hear them talking, whistling, or walking loudly. That's kind of how foreshadowing works. Those hints-like a person talking, whistling, or walking loudly, provide you with clues that someone is coming without you seeing them first. For example, imagine it's sunny outside. Sometimes when the sun is in the right place, you may see a shadow before you actually see the person. This shadow gives you a hint about the person's presence before they actually arrive. You see a shadow before you see the person. Again, that's kind of what foreshadowing is . . . a hint or clue about something coming in the story's future.
Task
Now let's put your skills to the test. Pretend that you are a detective investigating this situation. Reread "The Landlady" and search for clues or hints of foreshadowing. Place your selected examples under column one of The Landlady Foreshadowing Graphic Organizer. (Click here to open the View-only link that you can download from Word.) You should be able to find five examples of foreshadowing. Explain what your five examples foreshadow under column two. Tip: The hints and clues are things that might have saved Billy if he would have noticed them. (Note: You can create your own graphic organizer/chart for this foreshadowing activity.)

Exit Ticket 42
How does Roald Dahl use foreshadowing to prepare his readers for the conclusion of "The Landlady"?

Exploration Activity (Extra Credit)
Exploration Activity: Pretend you are Billy Weaver during his stay at the Bed and Breakfast. After drinking tea, eating a ginger biscuit, and conversing with the landlady, you return to your bedroom to write a letter to an associate, friend, your parents, or another relative. (Be sure that the individual that you select to write your letter to is an individual that was mentioned in the story or could realistically exist. Sorry, no imaginary friends.) In your letter, express your growing concern that something is not right with your situation. Include five clues (examples from your Foreshadowing Graphic Organizer) that are making you nervous about staying in the bed and breakfast. Discuss your concerns, but do not change the plot of the story. Use either Word Online or Google Docs to create your letter. Title your work: Billy Weaver Letter. Use Henderson Middle School's address as yours (see the example letter as a reference). Upon completing your letter, print it out, and place it in an envelope. (Do not seal the envelope.) This assignment is due 11/3/22.

Need help writing a personal letter?
- Place today's date in the upper right corner of your paper.
- A few lines below the date, on the left side of your paper, write "Dear" and the person's name, followed by a comma. This is called a greeting (ex-Dear Jane,).
- Two lines under your greeting, indent and write your first paragraph. Indent other paragraphs in the body of your letter.
- After your last paragraph, skip two lines and write a closing like "Sincerely" or "Love" on the right, followed by a comma (ex-Sincerely,).

Do you need to schedule a Student-Teacher Conference?
Click here to open Mr. Reed's Student-Teacher Conference Schedule. Read and follow the instructions on the document to request and schedule a student-teacher conference. Keep in mind, conferences can be used to discuss goals/academic performance, individual tutorial sessions, work on special assignments/projects, learn/re-teach technology skills, improve organization, and a variety of other things.
Note: Students, if you received a zero for a Flocabulary or CommonLit assignment, please use the Student-Teacher Conference Schedule to request a meeting. Please have an itemization of the assignments you did not complete and a reason/the reasons why you were unable to complete the assignment(s) by the due date and/or the extended deadline. (Remember, you're not on trial; we just need to have an honest discussion to identify areas of concern and find solutions to reduce/eliminate academic challenges.) You will also need your Chromebook. Afterwards, we can discuss making up the late work or completing extra credit assignments to replace the zero/zeroes in the grade book-if applicable or available. (Reminder: This is a conference between the student and the teacher. It's an opportunity for our learners to take ownership, accountability, and responsibility for their academic performance at school. It will also help our students learn how to professionally communicate with their teachers and future instructors/professors.)
