ELA Summer Reading
Select at least one books to read over the summer from Tom Toliken's School Reading List for 9th Graders (link: https://k-12readinglist.com/reading-lists-for-high-school-students/reading-list-for-9th-grade-students-age-14-15/). Make arrangements to obtain the book (library reservation, rental, Kindle, purchase, etc.). Read the book over the summer and ponder over the many elements in the story (plot, conflicts, characters and their traits, theme, resolution, etc.). I have listed the books I read in high school, as well as the student favorites from the past few years. Feel free to choose a book from either list. Note: Please read the synopsis of each book and obtain parent permission before reading any novel.
Classic books that I read in high school: Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Hound of the Baskervilles, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Odyssey, The Iliad (by Homer, but I suggest reading the Gareth Hinds' adaptation), Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury), 1984 (George Orwell), The Illustrated Man (Ray Bradbury), Frankenstein (Mary Shelley), The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), For Whom the Bell Tolls (Ernest Hemingway), Animal Farm (George Orwell), and The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck).
Student Favorites: The Fifth Wave, The Red Queen, Every Day, Under the Bridge, Wolf by Wolf, Shadowmancer, The House of the Scorpion, Magisterium, The Eleventh Plague (Jeff Hirsch), The Book Thief (Markus Zusak), The Young Elites (Mary Lu), Illuminae (Amie Kaufman), Black Like Me (John Howard Griffin), and Life As We Knew It (Susan Beth Pfeffer).
